Nor did it actually matter because the focus was not – and never should be, surely? – on what he wasn’t, but what he is. Scotty has a developmental disorder, probably We never learn what it is as there are no doctors to take him to who could make a diagnosis. So I hope, since I loved Scott (or Scotty sometimes) that readers do, too, even though I know they might not. Whereas, in Inish Carraig, Henry Carter has been picked out by many readers as their favourite – and he was always what made the book work for me, more than John Dray, the main character. For instance, in Abendau Lichio is a reader favourite, but he’s not one of mine. Often, they are the favourite of the readers, too – although not always. They’re not always the main one, although they sometimes are. There’s always a character I love more than others. He’s not the main character (there are two) but, instead the brother of one of those – but I think he’s the beating heart of the book. In this book Tara Chace is gradually coming apart. The artwork seems to have settled down a bit by this third volume - I found the changing styles for the first two quite disconcerting.
