In the last decades of his life, as he grappled with his much-anticipated second novel, Ellison turned inward, and he studied his private universe at home with a Polaroid camera. During his formative years in New York City in the 1940s, he keenly photographed his surroundings, with many images serving as field notes for his writing. Throughout his life, photography played multiple roles for Ellison: a hobby, a source of income, a note-taking tool and an artistic outlet. Photographer is the first book dedicated to Ellison’s extensive work in the medium, which spans from the 1930s to the ’90s. ![]() Lesser known, however, is his lifelong engagement with photography. Ralph Ellison (1913–94) is a foremost figure in American literature, hailed for his seminal novel Invisible Man (1952), a breakthrough representation of the American experience and Black everyday life. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The old man and the seapdf![]() ![]() ![]() This tale of an aged Cuban fisherman going head-to-head (or hand-to-fin) with a magnificent marlin encapsulates Hemingway's favorite motifs of physical and moral challenge. A half century later, it's still easy to see why. It also led directly to his receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1954 (an award Hemingway gladly accepted, despite his earlier observation that "no son of a bitch that ever won the Nobel Prize ever wrote anything worth reading afterwards"). In fact The Old Man and the Sea revived Ernest Hemingway's career, which was foundering under the weight of such postwar stinkers as Across the River and into the Trees. Reviews Here, for a change, is a fish tale that actually does honor to the author. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal - a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. ![]() DOWNLOADīook Description The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. But I’ll try to summarise everything in several neat points. ![]() I’ve written quite a few notes, some of which follow the story page by page. When I finished reading the book, I felt that I have too many things to say and discuss, and not enough time (in this case – space) to get into every little detail. Mythago Wood definitely gives you something to think about. And just like a little child, I didn’t understand everything, but I didn’t have to, the fairy tale enchanted me. Nevertheless, I felt like a little child hearing the story of my ancestors for the first time. This was not because the language was unnecessarily heavy or convoluted, but because I usually read in the evenings after work when I’m rather tired. Robert Holdstock has a very unique way of story-telling, which was a bit difficult to follow at times. I braced myself for the second round of fantasy stories and it was a bit of a challenge. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Dead end in norvelt by jack gantos![]() But plenty of excitement (and shocks) are coming Jack's way once his mom loans him out to help a fiesty old neighbor with a most unusual chore-typewriting obituaries filled with stories about the people who founded his utopian town.
